About Me
Iquitos, Peru is one of Peru's largest jungle towns. There are no roads
in or out of this town, so the only way
there is by riverboat on the Amazon River or by airplane. Iquitos is one of
Peru's major gateways to the Amazon basin. From here you can arrange riverboat
rides to the sister cities of Leticia, Columbia and Tabatinga, Brazil, or
tours into the Amazon jungle.
I hope you enjoy my photos of Iquitos, Peru.

A market in Iquitos, Peru.
|
A view of Iquitos' riverfront. During the
rainy season the Amazon River rises dramatically. Houses here
are built to either float on the river or are built on stilts to stay dry
during the high water season.

This is the medicine market in Iquitos, Peru.
In this market, it's possible to buy remedies for just about any ailment
imaginable. Although many of the medicines are prepared and bottled, what
is most often sold
here isn't exactly medicine, but the ingredients to make your own medicine.
This includes barks and roots from many different types of trees and plants,
and skins from various lizards and frogs. The recipes for making medicine
from these ingredients are provided by the merchants. In case you're not a
believer, I'll
point out that
quinine , an early treatment and preventative of malaria,
was first brought to Europe from South America in the 17th century. At that
time it was derived from what the native Peruvians called quina quina - the
bark of the cinchona tree.
