After rediscovering Machu Picchu, Hiram Bingham was funded by the National Geographic
Society and Yale University to fully explore and excavate the site. He
described Machu Picchu's location and the reason for its 300 year
"disappearance" as being due to it being located on a ridge
"in the most inaccessible corner
of the most inaccessible section of the Andes".
If you're interested in this sort of thing, I would highly recommend Hiram
Bingham's book entitled "Lost City of the Incas - the story of Machu Picchu
and its builders".
I hope you enjoy my photos of Machu Picchu.
