People in the villages that we visited were mainly farmers or fishermen.
But the women also made handicrafts to sell to travelers that moved down the
Amazon River. They would also put on shows for the tourists, such as dancing,
and sometimes would let people into their homes either to be hospitable or to
show their lifestyle. Their homes were pretty bleak, with none of the
conveniences most westerners take for granted. Furniture was, at most, a
hammock or a small block to squat on. They did not have electricity. They
usually cooked over an open fire inside their home in a firepit lined with
clay or mud. The people were usually grateful to receive any useful implement.
For instance, being near the end of my trip, I decided to make a gift of my
flashlight, which was much appreciated.
I hope you enjoy my photos of the Amazon River and villages in the Amazon
jungle of Peru.
